Renewable Energy: The Solar Opportunity in Tanzania

Tanzania sits in a region with high solar irradiation for close to the entire year. On resource alone, it is one of the better-placed countries in the world for solar energy. But a resource does not build a project. What is needed is a commercial structure that makes sense, a customer who pays, and maintenance that continues after the engineers have left.

Where the demand actually is

Four segments show clear, visible demand:

  • Industry and larger commercial users. The cost of diesel generation and the production lost to outages is significant. Rooftop solar with storage reduces both directly.
  • Agriculture. Solar irrigation pumping, crop drying, and cold rooms for vegetables, dairy and fish. Here energy adds value to produce rather than merely cutting a cost.
  • Off-grid communities. Mini-grids and solar home systems for areas the national grid will take years to reach.
  • Public services. Clinics, schools and water points that need reliable power.

What separates a project that lasts

We have watched many African energy projects start well and die within three years. The reasons are almost always the same: no maintenance regime, no spare parts nearby, and no collection system that works. The technology is not the problem — operations are.

An energy project is a service business hidden inside hardware. The winner is whoever can still serve the customer ten years later.

Four questions before investing

  1. Who pays, at what price, and under what length of contract?
  2. How far are the spare parts and the technicians from the site?
  3. How is payment collected — cash, mobile money, or pay-as-you-go?
  4. What happens if the national grid reaches the area in five years?

Where WAHI Energy fits

WAHI Energy treats energy as a long-term business: developing projects, arranging finance, managing construction, and making sure operations continue once construction ends. We welcome partnerships with equipment manufacturers, EPC contractors and financial institutions looking for credibly structured energy projects in Tanzania.

If you hold the technology or the capital and need a local partner who can execute, let us talk.
